Waxing and Waning

April 2, 2015

by Elena de Roo

Your face of silver
lights the sky
a perfect plate
of pale moon pie

and if I took
a bite of you
then I’d be full
and you’d be new

Ref: p.275 Ed. Paula Green (2014) A Treasury of NZ poems for children. Illustrated by Jenny Cooper. Random House: Auckland

It’s nice the way Elena de Roo works her pie metaphor through to make sense of the shape of a new vs. full moon. I could never remember which was which when I was little and a poem like this would have helped! It rhymes; it tells a little story; it puns; it uses metaphor; it has a simple rhythm and is totally memorable. Cool poem.
