WWI centenary begins
The Central leader (www.centralleader.co.nz) recently ran an article on a website designed to commemorate WWI:
Some of the themes running through our memory/historicisation of this event are interesting to me and captured in this article:
“World War I (1914 – 1918) was one of the most significant events of the 20th Century and had a seismic impact on New Zealand society.
Ten per cent of the country’s then population of just one million served overseas, with more than 18,00 killed and more than 40,000 wounded.”
“The centenary is the time to dig into your past to discover your stories – maybe even new truths – about how the war touched your family, community or workplace,” Pip Swaney (WWioo programme manager)
