NZ and Oz; mutual awareness?

Margaret Mahy once observed that “New Zealand writers have a following in Australia, though the awareness that New Zealanders and Australians have of one another’s books is unexpectedly limited. Readers in both countries tend to look most eagerly to the United States or the United Kingdom for their literary connections….” (np)

I think that’s still true… Why is that?! What resources are there for bridging that distance?
