Defining culture – Michael King

April 6, 2012

On asking himself “whether or not there is such a thing as Pakeha culture in New Zealand”, Michael King offers the following definition of culture:

“By culture, of course, I am not referring simply to the arts, nor more especially to the ‘high’ arts, as some people do when they use the term. I refer to the basis of the relationship between the individual and society, the values and rituals through which people perceive and feel their identity; and by which society accepts them – for culture, by its nature, is both inclusive and exclusive.” (37)
