Potiki – form and function

January 5, 2012

Potiki, Patricia Grace explains, in an interview with Paloma Fresno Calleja “is set out like a whaikorero, a piece of oratory, and a formal piece of oratory has a format to it. It will often have at its beginning a chant, a tauparapara it’s called, something that brings the attention towards the speaker. And then we have the greetings. Then will come the body or main part of the speech and at the endthere will often be ‘Ka huri’ to turn over to another next speaker or the next storyteller to tell his/her story.” (114)
