Computer games in your backyard

April 10, 2011

Re. The Serpents of Arakesh, VM Jones:

I took interest when Adam said: “All the kids in the class seemed to have computers and be really into that kind of stuff.  And who could blame them? It must be like having a whole different world in your back yard. What wouldn’t I give for that?” (my emphasis, p27)

Of course, this turns out to be slightly ironic, but is this otherworldliness inherently part of it?  Is there a need for ‘somewhere else’ in childhood? In ‘good’ childhoods? ‘bad’?
