How else could it have been written?

Genesis - Bernard Beckett

Something my supervisor suggested which has always stuck with me is to consider a text with this question in mind:

How else could this have been written?

When you ask this question of Beckett’s Genesis, much of the narrative structure becomes more visibly intricate and crafty.  For example:

Rewrite this story from the Examiners’ point of view; write their account of Anaximander’s examination and death.

How did Pericles experience the events of this novel? (Bearing in mind he was Anaxamander’s teacher, but had also passed this examination in the first place…)
