Where are the elders?

March 18, 2011

Something I continue to observe is an absence of older people in YA Lit… Ah you might say, but this is literature dominated by teenage characters – yes, my point exactly!

How come their community doesn’t seem to include any older people anymore?

Of course the elderly haven’t disappeared entirely; Maurice Gee, for example, still writes with the assumption that they play a role in a young person’s life and I must reread his works with this in mind, but ‘elders’ don’t seem to have a role in much literature for young adults these days… and when they are there, what do they look like? Powerful?
